A union strike took place at MMG’s major Peruvian copper mine. Around half of the 2,000 workers employed at the operation are members of the Las Bambas workers union. The profit from the mine would be cut in half this year which caused the workers to have fewer benefits under the profit-sharing scheme, so they asked for improved profit-sharing and transport conditions.

The protest occurred at Peru’s Las Bambas copper mine operated by the Chinese company MMG Ltd. The copper production of this mine went up by nearly 22% yearly in 2023. The annual production is around 250,000 tons of copper concentrate.
