The US' Schupan indicated that it had invested more than US$40 million in two aluminum shredding and sorting facilities in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Logan County, Kentucky. The facility in Kalamazoo will be put into operation in early 2024. The investment also included land acquisition and building construction.

The reason for Schupan to choose Kalamazoo as a site was that it could have a natural extension from its existing operations in the city. The choice of a Kentucky site in Logan County was because it was close to several large consumers.

The facility in Kalamazoo will apply its shredding and sorting technology to prepare lower grades of obsolete aluminum scrap and coil manufacturers. The Kentucky plant will be responsible for preparing used beverage cans (UBCs).
