The UK government reiterated its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and said it has partially or fully adopted the recommendations of the Climate Change Committee (CCC).

The new Labor government said it took over with policies that failed to address climate challenges or seize related opportunities. The government has promoted renewable power, sustainable transportation, domestic heating, biodiversity, and other plans, and intends to update the strategy for achieving the fourth to sixth carbon budgets (2023-37) in 2025, and formulate the seventh carbon budget (2038-42) by June 2026.

Recent measures include lifting a ban on onshore wind power, approving renewable energy projects, and issuing the first carbon transport and storage permit.

The 2030 clean power target was lowered from 100% to 95%. UK prime minister Keir Starmer announced at the UN Cop 29 climate summit that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 81% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels.
