Tata Steel Netherlands is moving closer to its goal of making greener steel by submitting a draft environmental impact assessment (EIA), aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030.

The company has handed in a draft EIA for its Green Steel plan to the North Sea Canal District Environmental Protection Authority. This plan is a major step towards reducing carbon emissions and switching to more sustainable energy and materials. The entire process, including getting approvals, is expected to take about a year.

As part of the transition, Tata Steel will replace its coal-powered blast furnaces with cleaner direct reduced iron (DRI) technology and electric arc furnaces. Initially, the DRI plant will use natural gas and later switch to hydrogen when it becomes widely available.

Tata Steel Netherlands is also already producing steel with 30% recycled content, showing its commitment to lowering its environmental impact.

This Green Steel project highlights Tata Steel Netherlands’ determination to lead the way in sustainable steelmaking and meet its green goals by 2030.
