The Minister of Investment in Saudi Arabia said that due to low-cost electricity and natural gas and the government’s green energy plans, the steel industry in Saudi Arabia was speeding up to aim for production in a green and sustainable way.

Besides, Saudi Arabia’s steel production was 100% by direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF). In addition, the carbon emission from the country’s iron and steel plants was 60% lower global average because its production was by natural gas and electricity.

The country aimed to reach the share of renewable energy up to 50% of the total mix by 2030. Also, it targeted to produce 3 million tons of blue hydrogen and 1 million tons of green hydrogen yearly, making the iron producers can use green hydrogen directly instead of natural gas.
