Members of the OECD voiced their concern about the overproduction in the steel industry at a meeting held in Paris this week. “Concern was expressed that steel producers in various parts of the world have increased capacity significantly or intend to do so in the years to come by extending existing capacities and/or creating new capacities, whilst most forecasts for demand over the years to come suggest that worldwide steel capacities are largely sufficient requirements in the future,” said OECD steel committee chairman Risaburo Nezu. He added that OECD members should more attention to the steel production as the continued overproduction could be detrimental to the long term health of the industry as well as the environment. Global steel production in 2006 is expected to rise by 8 percent with European and American production expected to grow by 9 percent. (Nov. 9)
