India mandates local steel production for government projects starting in 2025

The Indian government has announced a revised Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP) Policy, effective from 2025, requiring all steel used in government-funded projects to be fully produced domestically. The policy mandates that melting and casting processes must take place within India using local raw materials, effectively excluding imported steel with minimal processing.

This rule applies to all government departments and funded projects exceeding Rs 500,000. Foreign bidders from countries that impose trade restrictions on Indian firms will be barred from participation. However, exemptions will be allowed for certain specialty steel products not currently manufacturable in India.

Industry experts view the move as a major step toward a self-reliant India, expected to boost local steel capacity, employment, and global competitiveness.
