The Indian Federal Ministry of Commerce was considering postponing the implementation of relative tariffs on US imports, a move to pave a way for the 2+2 bilateral dialogue in September and the exemption from the US' tariffs.

The retaliative tariff for 29 US' imports notified in June was US$241 million and would take effect on August 4th. The Minister of Commerce tended to postpone the date of retaliative tariffs, which would help provide a more harmonious atmosphere for the 2+2 meeting.

Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO of the Federation of Indian Exporters (FIEO), said this was a pragmatic move because the US was their main buyer. If India just escalated the dispute, it might get more injure from the tariff.

Indian exports of steel and aluminum to the US were close to US$2 billion. It was better if India could try to negotiate with the US and obtain exemption for tariffs.
