Based on the World Steel Association (worldsteel)'s statistic of crude steel producers, India has surpassed Japan to become the world's second largest steel producer. The largest producer was still China, accounting for more than 51% of total production amount.

In 2018, global crude steel output reached around 1.8 billion tons, an annual increase of 4.6%, of which Chinese crude steel output reached 930 million tons, increasing by 6.6% year on year, Indian volume came to around 107 million tons, up by 4.9% year on year, and Japan had around 104 million tons, an annual reduction of 0.3%. Then, the EU production was 168 million tons roughly, decreasing by 0.3% year on year.

Owing to rapid development of infrastructure in recent years in India, market demand for steel and raw materials has been increased, and local steel mills actively expanded their capacity. Indian steel consumption in 2019 will surpass the US.
