The European Union (EU) is preparing to coordinate with countries affected by US-imposed tariffs, such as Canada, Japan, and Asia-Pacific partners, in response to newly announced US tariffs. Talks between the EU and the US remain stalled, particularly over automobile and agricultural tariffs.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU will extend the suspension of its countermeasures against the US until August 1, citing the need for further negotiations. She noted previous retaliatory measures on steel and aluminum had already been paused but warned that new countermeasures are being prepared.

Von der Leyen emphasized the EU prefers a negotiated solution and confirmed the bloc’s powerful anti-coercion instrument would not yet be used. EC Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera said the EU is also working to deepen trade ties with India and other Asia-Pacific nations. US President Donald Trump announced 30% tariffs on the EU and Mexico starting August 1.
