The European Court of Justice recently ruled that the Ilva steel plant (now known as Acciaierie d'Italia, ADI) in Taranto, southern Italy, must suspend operations if it severely threatens the environment and human health.

The Milan District Court will evaluate the case's validity. The European Court highlighted that the European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2019 that the steel plant significantly adversely impacted the environment and local residents' health.

Despite measures to reduce these impacts since 2012, their implementation deadlines have been repeatedly extended. The court emphasized that ADI must immediately comply with operating permit conditions and cannot extend deadlines for protective measures if they pose severe threats to the environment and human health.
