After September 2006, structural steel supplied in the UK market will have to follow with new requirements for CE marking. This comes despite the fact that the British government has not made the measures compulsory. Currently, the CE marking is compulsory in most of EU countries except UK, Ireland, Sweden, and Finland. All rolled structural steels under Euronorm 10025; 2004 are covered by CE marking. All producers will have to comply it when supplying the EU and Efta markets, especially in the field of public sector contracts. Also, rebar EN10080 will need to follow the rule and become compulsory after June 2006. As the director general of British Constructional Steelwork Assn-Derek Tordoff said, "CE marking is not compulsory in the UK, but it is compulsory to satisfy the requirements of CE marking even if the marking is not used." In addition, the UK deputy prime minister's official website also states the marking as a "passport" to the European markets. (Nov. 21)
