The Government of Canada stated that it will set new quotas and impose new tariffs on seven categories of steel products from all countries. The new measures of the Ottawa authorities were aimed at avoiding the search for new customers by steelmakers blocked by US tariffs caused Canadian imports of steel products to climb.

In June, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico for exporting US steel and aluminum on the grounds of national security. Although the new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has been signed, the US has not lifted tariff measures against the two countries.

In order to alleviate the doubts that other countries have exported to the US through Canada and pretend that these steel products were produced in Canada, the Canadian government has announced tariffs on seven types of steel products exported to Canada by other countries.

Mexico said recently that it regretted the decision of the Ottawa authorities and will try to prevent domestic exports of steel products from being affected by trade protection measures.
