Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on July 16 that Canada will implement a tariff rate quota system for countries with which it has free trade agreements, excluding the United States, to protect its domestic steel industry.

Carney stated that imports exceeding 2024 levels will face a 50% tariff on the excess. However, Canada will continue to honor existing arrangements with its United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) partners.

Besides, Canada will impose a 25% additional tariff on steel imports from all non-US nations containing steel melted and poured in China before the end of July.
