US government injects $6 billion to help steel and other heavy chemical industries reduce carbon emissions

The US government has announced a US$6 billion funding program to help the steel and aluminum industries reduce greenhouse gas emissions while increasing domestic manufacturing competition and expanding manufacturing employment.

In addition to steel and aluminum, the assistance includes the chemicals, concrete, pulp, and paper industries, which together account for nearly a quarter of US emissions and they are the key to achieving the goal of a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

The funding is understood to be provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act and distributed by the Department of Energy's Industrial Demonstrations Program.
