The Brazilian government announced an increase to 25% in the tariffs on imports of certain construction steel products, in an effort to prevent unfair trade practices from products entering the Brazilian market at prices below domestic prices.

At the request of the National Union of Ferrous Metal Drawing and Rolling Industries (SICETEL), the import tariffs on certain iron and steel ropes, cables, and wires would be raised to 25% from the current 12.6%. Silicon-manganese steel alloy wires’ tariffs would rise from 14% to 25%, and some steel nails and similar articles’ tariffs would hike to 25% from 14%.

In addition, certain steel products, including welded gratings and nets, alloyed wires, coated wires, and galvanized wires, would face a temporary tariff increase to 25%, valid until May 31, 2025.
