Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. announced the establishment of a new electrical distribution transformer production plant in Weirton, West Virginia. This US$150 million investment will repurpose the Half Moon Warehouse in Weirton to produce three-phase distribution transformers. The project aims to address the critical shortage of these transformers, which is hindering economic growth across the U.S.

The state of West Virginia will contribute US$50 million through a forgivable loan to support the project, which is expected to come online in the first half of 2026. The plant will reemploy 600 workers from the idled Weirton tinplate mill and increase demand for American-made Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES), produced by Cleveland-Cliffs’ mill in Butler, Pennsylvania.
