Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal would shut down its Indiana blast furnace and suspend the blast furnace investment program because of low market demand.

Due to the reduced demand, the No. 3 blast furnace in the Indiana Harbor integrated steel mill would be shut down. The steel plant has three blast furnaces and four basic oxygen furnaces. The annual steel production capacity was 6.4 million tons, of which the No. 3 blast furnace with a daily output of about 4,500 tons of pig iron, the blast furnace shutdown plan would not affect the demand of the customers, and would eventually resume operation when demand increased.

Due to the fall in steel prices, the US steel industry's response measures were idle blast furnaces, and US Steel intended to continue to idle two US blast furnaces for the remainder of 2019.

The monthly output of the two blast furnaces was between 200,000 and 225,000 short tons.
