Indian Tata Steel has announced plans to hike the capacity of its Jamshedpur mill to 6.8 million tons per year by September from the current 5 million.

The company recorded significant increases in production in the first quarter. Hot metal production reached 1.387 million tons and crude steel production at 1.253 million tons, higher by 3.2 percent and 8.6 percent respectively.

Saleable steel production was 1.187 million tons, increased by 11.5 percent. Sales in the first quarter rose by 11 percent to 1.081 million tons.

Sales to the automotive sector increased to 216,000 tons, a market share of 42 percent, as against a market share of 38 percent in the first quarter.
