AM/NS Calvert, a 50/50 joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, has partnered with SMS group for a major automation upgrade of its high-capacity hot strip mill in Calvert, Alabama, aiming to modernize technology and increase operational efficiency.

The phased project from 2025 to 2027 will integrate advanced X-Pact® Embedded controllers and the X-Pact® ProBAS software platform for high-speed control capabilities. The upgrade includes an EtherCAT real-time Ethernet network and a Profibus remote I/O system.

This technological advancement offers improved programming, high-speed control, and better diagnostic capabilities, ensuring seamless plant operations and digital readiness.

Continuing a long-term collaboration, SMS group's solution will help AM/NS Calvert's 5.3 million-ton capacity mill, serving diverse markets, maintain its competitive edge by meeting evolving market demands with high-quality steel products.
