Domestic demand for flat steel in Turkey is currently at around 9 million tons annually. Due to the expansion of the automotive and durable goods industries, the shipbuilding industry and pipeline demands, annual demand is expected to increase at a rate of 10 percent annually. Therefore, there are many steel mills in Turkey who are expanding in flat production. Colakoglu is currently busy with new caster projects, while Kibar’s slab re-rolling project and Erdemir’s flat steel expansion are also ongoing. Domestic flat steel production is expected to increase by between a third and 50 percent at the end if this year. (Sep. 12)
