TEC H2 MAG, a subsidiary of the French energy company TotalEnergies, has submitted an application for an environmental permit to develop a US$16 billion green hydrogen and ammonia project in Chile, H2 Magallanes.

The H2 Magallanes totally includes a 5 GW wind power plant, 7 electrolysis centres, a desalination plant, an ammonia production plant with a capacity of 1.9 million tons per year, four storage tanks of 60,000 m3, and a maritime infrastructure for shipping. The wind power plant will have 616 wind turbines rated 8 MW each and they offer power to the electrolysis centres. Green hydrogen will be produced from the desalination plant, in which seawater is desalinated and demineralised.

The project will be under environmental assessment from 2025-2027, and start construction in 2027. It is targeted to begin operations in 2030.

The project aligns with Chile’s goal to become a global leader in green hydrogen production through electrolysis, aiming to reach a yearly capacity of 28 GW and 2.7 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030.
