Tata Steel and Welspun Corp. jointly developed hydrogen-compliant steel pipes for transporting gaseous hydrogen, a significant step in hydrogen transportation. The companies achieved the milestone by creating API X65 grade pipes, which passed essential sour service and fracture tests for 100% pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure at RINA, Italy.

This collaboration makes Tata Steel and Welspun Corp. the first Indian companies to produce electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes for hydrogen transport. In 2022, they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop these pipes through the ERW Pipe route. Tata Steel provided hot-rolled coils from its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, while Welspun Corp. manufactured the pipes.
