India’s Tata Steel has been given the go ahead for their planned ferrochrome plant in South Africa. Tata will build the US$103 million plant in the Alton North Light industrial area in Richards Bay, 150 kilometers north of Durban. The company received the green light from the South African Government earlier this week after an in depth environmental impact investigation was completed. Several complaints were lodged against the proposed plant by local environmental groups and the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs was called in to undertake the investigation. Tata decided to set the plant up in South Africa after they were given favorable power tariffs. The project was initially planned for Australia. (Mar. 10)
