SSAB, a Sweden-based steelmaker, signed a letter of intent with truck maker Scania to supply decarbonized steel products for Scania’s heavy-duty vehicles by 2030.

The pact shows that Scania’s heavy-duty vehicles will start using SSAB Fossil-free™ steel from 2026, and the use will increase to 100% by 2030, which is a major step in shifting towards a sustainable transport system and a move to greatly lower climate emissions.

SSAB Fossil-free™ steel is made with the HYBRIT technology. The technology replaces coking coal, traditionally used to make steel from iron ore, with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. The by-product is water rather than carbon dioxide.
