SSAB & Danieli ink deal for decarbonized mini-mill in Luleå

SSAB, a Sweden-based steel company, and Danieli have inked a contract for a highly automated mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden, following their Early Service Agreement (ESA) reached in July last year. This 2.5 million tons/year facility is an important step in SSAB's strategy for decarbonized special and premium steels.

The new Luleå mini-mill will feature two electric arc furnaces, advanced secondary metallurgy, a direct strip rolling mill for the production of specialty products, and a cold rolling complex for premium products for the mobility segment. It will produce hot-rolled strip with a thickness from 1.3mm to 25.4mm, a width of up to 2100mm, and coils weighing up to 40 tons.

Besides, the mill will feature two 210-ton Digimelters with Q-One power feeder, a MeltModel suite, and ECS continuous scrap charging for efficiency and reduced NOx emissions.

Upon completion, the existing blast furnace system will be decommissioned, reducing Sweden's CO2 emissions by 7%.
