UK embarks on green transformation to secure steel industry's future

Britain's steel industry is undergoing a significant transformation as it faces pressure to adopt greener technologies to secure its future.

MP for Scunthorpe Nic Dakin emphasized the need for investment in green steel production, with the closure of blast furnaces and the shift towards electric arc furnaces (EAFs). While EAFs are more energy-efficient and produce fewer emissions, they rely on high-quality iron ore, which is limited globally.

The UK government has formed the Steel Council to focus on long-term growth, aiming to invest up to £2.5 billion in the sector.

Experts suggest that focusing on low-carbon steel could position the UK as a key player in a growing global market, despite its relatively small production compared to other countries like China.
