Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) announced on December 4 that they will expand the use of carbon-reduced construction steel and create a low-carbon building model.

The core of the plan is to use carbon-reduced rebars and H-beams produced by Hyundai Steel. These materials are made from scrap and manufactured using the electric arc furnace (EAF) method, with significantly lower carbon emissions than traditional blast furnace methods. Hyundai Steel’s rebars and H-beams have a lower carbon footprint compared to similar products produced by the same EAF methods.

Besides, the two companies have cooperated with Sampyo Cement to develop carbon-reduced products used in the cement industry, which they plan to apply to construction sites next year.

Research shows that if all major building materials adopt carbon-reduced steel products and cement, the embodied carbon emissions of buildings can be reduced by about 30%.

The move marks an important step towards sustainable construction, promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials and energy-saving design.
