On April 17, The United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced the initiation of a section 301 investigation into alleged unfair practices by China targeting the maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. This decision follows a petition filed by five national labor unions, citing concerns over China's use of non-market policies to dominate these industries.

Ambassador Katherine Tai stated that the petition presents serious allegations of China's efforts to dominate these sectors using unfair practices. The investigation will delve into these claims, with USTR seeking public comments and scheduling a public hearing.

The probe, conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, aims to address unfair foreign practices affecting US commerce. The petition was filed on March 12, 2024, by unions including USW, IAM, IBB, IBEW, and MTD.
