29 Oct 2020 14:56 reported by Ranny Fang
The ASEAN region usually imports 50 million tons of finished steel each year, while the steel exports are as low as 7-8 million tons per year. However, according to a statement from the South East Asia Iron And Steel Institute (SEAISI), finished steel exports from the region doubled in 2019 to 15 million tons.
Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia have become the major emerging exporters of finished steel in the ASEAN region.
Vietnam is the largest exporter among the six ASEAN countries, and the steel exports increased to 2 million tons in 2019, mainly flat products. Indonesia is the second-largest exporter among the ASEAN countries, and flat product plays an essential role in its steel export. Malaysia takes place for the top long product export country among ASEAN, especially in wire and bar.
