US Steel plans to restart blast furnace at Gary Works

It was reportedly that US Steel is to restart its blast furnace No.6 at Gary Works after this weekend, as automobile makers resume operations.

The company suspended production in late April in response of coronavirus pandemic shut down automotive sector and undercut the steel demand. However, the blast furnace No.4 will still stay idle, according to source.

The company’s spokesperson Meghan Cox said US Steel remain ready to serve customers that are adjust to changing market conditions by utilizing the flexibility of banked blast furnaces and by adjusting operations intermittently to accommodate changes in the order book.

US Steel is expected to lose US$315 million in the second quarter due to the coronavirus outbreak and the economic turmoil caused by it.
