SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall announced that their joint venture HYBRIT initiative was in progress. The plant will be the first fossil-free steelmaking plant, and it was expected to start construction in 2023 and be put into operation in 2025.

The first plant might be located in Norrbotten, Sweden, but it hasn't yet been determined. The choice of location will have a significant impact on future competitiveness and climate benefits.

In Lulea, where SSAB's mills located, will be built as a pilot plant for fossil-free steel this summer, and it was also preparing to build a temporary hydrogen store.
