VSB advances solar project at thyssenkrupp packaging steel plant

12 Aug 2026 17:16 reported by Carol Dong

A A A
Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein is set to add onsite solar generation to its Andernach packaging steel complex as part of efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations.

VSB Group will develop an 8 MWp solar farm capable of producing around 8 GWh of electricity each year. All power generated by the facility will be supplied directly to the plant, supporting more stable energy costs and reducing its reliance on the public grid.

Around 12,000 panels will be installed on two unused plots covering 5.2 hectares. Construction is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2026, with commissioning planned for mid 2027.

VSB subsidiary Integrated Energy Solutions will finance and manage the facility under a 20 year power purchase agreement. The panel supports will use thyssenkrupp Steel’s lower carbon bluemint® steel with ZM EcoProtect® Solar coating, further extending the project’s emissions reduction benefits.
