Vedanta expands alumina capacity to 5 MTPA at Lanjigarh refinery

13 Jan 2026 16:13 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Vedanta Aluminium, the largest aluminum producer in India, has expanded its Lanjigarh refinery capacity to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), becoming the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China. This growth increases India’s total refining capacity to 13 MTPA, ranking the nation third globally.

The facility now produces 38% of India's alumina, supporting rising demand in the aerospace, electric vehicles, and renewable energy sectors.

Statistics showed that the refinery reached a record monthly output of 254,000 tons of alumina in November, soaring by 68% compared to the same month last year. This expansion secures India’s supply chain and reduces dependence on imports, cementing Vedanta’s role as a primary driver in the country’s industrial landscape.
