Vattenfall Eldistribution to expand power infrastructure for SSAB’s fossil-free steel mill in Luleå

Swedish electricity network operator Vattenfall Eldistribution has received approval to build two new 170 kV power lines to support SSAB’s transition to fossil-free steel production in Luleå. Each line will be approximately 11 km long and will run between Hällmyran and the Svarton industrial area.

The new infrastructure will connect SSAB’s planned steel mill at Svarton to the electricity grid. The project will provide the power capacity required for SSAB to shift from traditional blast furnace-based production to a modern integrated electric steel mill.

The two lines will use a design that allows both power lines to be installed on the same structure. Vattenfall said the investment will also strengthen the regional electricity grid in Luleå while supporting SSAB’s industrial transformation.
