VALCO scales up smelter capacity to drive local aluminum processing

Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), an aluminum company in Ghana, is increasing its smelter operational capacity from 23% to 40% to advance Ghana’s integrated aluminum strategy. This expansion aims to transform the sector by processing bauxite locally rather than exporting it in a raw state.

CEO Dr. Robert Makila Sambian announced that new machinery, including lift trucks and loaders, is already in place to support these enhanced operations.

The modernization focuses on refining, smelting, and downstream manufacturing to create high-value products such as cables.

Recent independent tests in Canada confirmed that these products meet international quality standards. With a trial order secured for the European market, VALCO intends to increase domestic utilization of primary aluminum while securing a stronger position in global trade.
