The United States has proposed that Mexico impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imported from outside North America, similar to US Section 232 measures. The plan aims to curb Chinese imports while preserving preferential access for producers in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Mexico is reportedly open to discussing the proposal during the USMCA review. Tariff rates and covered products have not yet been finalised, though Washington hopes to reach a framework agreement by year-end.

The US currently applies 50% tariffs to steel and aluminium from China and most other countries, while Mexico imposes product-specific duties of up to 25% on non-FTA partners. 

Mexico has offered to reduce Chinese steel purchases and is seeking the removal of US tariffs on Mexican metals.
