US unions criticize Trump's China port fee suspension

11 Nov 2025 15:08 reported by Joy Liu

Major US labor organizations, led by the United Steelworkers (USW), have condemned the Trump administration’s decision to temporarily halt port fees on Chinese vessels. Unions argued this move undermines efforts to restore the American maritime industry.

In a joint letter to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the unions, including the International Association of Machinists (IAM), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB), expressed deep disappointment, saying the suspension introduces uncertainty and allows China to continue its predatory behavior.

The administration’s plan, part of a trade truce with China, suspended tariffs and port fees for a year, starting on November 10, 2025. The unions contended this temporary relief sacrifices the interests of American workers.
