US DOE selects Core Natural Resources for critical mineral recovery project

The US Department of Energy (DOE) selected CONSOL Innovations LLC, a subsidiary of Core Natural Resources, for a multi-million-dollar funding award.

The grant, part of the government’s industrial byproduct recovery initiative, targets extracting rare earth elements and critical minerals from coal waste tailings. Final contract amounts depend on successful upcoming negotiations.

Core Natural Resources plans to construct a pilot-scale processing facility at its Pennsylvania Mining Complex to refine these materials from existing mining byproducts. The initiative is in line with a broader corporate diversification strategy.

Earlier, the company's Touchstone Advanced Composites business secured a contract with Northrop Grumman to provide tooling for the YFQ-48A Talon Blue defence programme, expanding the mining firm's presence in advanced materials and strategic supply chains.
