UK tightens steel import quotas with new 50% tariff measures

The UK government has announced new steel trade measures effective July 1, 2026, covering 20 steel product categories. The policy will reduce duty-free import quotas by approximately 60% and impose a 50% tariff on imports exceeding quota limits. The move aligns with the European Union’s new safeguard regime, which will also tighten steel import restrictions.

The UK steel industry has welcomed the measures, arguing they are necessary to protect domestic producers and secure fair access to EU markets.

However, concerns remain over potential supply shortages, as the UK’s annual crude steel production of 2.6 million tonnes covers only about 30% of domestic demand. The restrictions could increase steel prices and add inflationary pressure across construction, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
