UK announces target of 87% carbon emissions cut by 2042

The UK government proposed its seventh Carbon Budget, establishing a science-led target to achieve an 87% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions during the 2038 to 2042 period.

Endorsed by the Climate Change Committee and the Environmental Audit Committee, this policy aims to transition the country toward homegrown clean power to prevent future fossil fuel price shocks.

An independent report indicated that the net-zero sector already supports more than one million domestic jobs, adding £105 billion in gross value to the economy in 2025.

Authorities intend to use a consumer choice-led framework to increase the deployment of solar energy, batteries, and electric vehicles. These combined strategies are expected to cut household energy bills, increase productivity, and improve air quality.
