U. S. Steel Košice, s.r.o. (USSK) approved an investment of around EUR 900 million to construct a new electric arc furnace (EAF) and air separation unit (ASU) at its Slovak steelworks, with production targeted to begin in 2030.

The project receives funding support through a grant agreement worth approximately EUR 350 million provided via the EU Modernization Fund. The new EAF will deliver an annual capacity of about 1.6 million metric tons to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Effective October 1, 2026, the subsidiary will operate directly under Nippon Steel and adopt the name NIPPON STEEL SLOVAKIA s. r. o. (NSSK). The modernization initiative secures long-term industrial capabilities and regional employment across Central and Eastern Europe.
