The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s steel industry group supports updating the TIS 24 standard for deformed steel bars to prioritize public safety.

Mr. Bantoon Juicharern, Chairman of the FTI steel industry group, said that the revised standard requires structural steel bars to use only basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) methods. These processes enable external refining to lower impurities such as phosphorus, sulfur, and gases, ensuring consistent quality for high-rise buildings and infrastructure.

The update brings Thai rules in line with global practices for the first time in over 25 years. The changes add stricter mechanical and chemical requirements matching Japanese and Chinese steel reinforcing bar standards. It introduces mandatory ISO fatigue testing to verify resistance against earthquakes and heavy vibrations, addressing domestic geological risks.
