Swedish steelmaker SSAB will resume construction of its new fossil-free steel mill in Luleå during Week 29 under controlled conditions. 

Work stopped on June 26 after portable gas detectors registered low concentrations of hydrogen cyanide. The readings remained below occupational exposure limits, and no related illnesses or symptoms were reported.

While activity was suspended, SSAB conducted additional measurements and revised its risk assessment and site safety plan. Contractors were also required to update their health and safety documents.

SSAB will oversee the restart, while individual contractors will remain responsible for worksite safety and ensuring that personnel have suitable protective equipment. Alarm procedures and communication channels are also in place to address irregularities quickly.

The stationary monitoring at the site will be expanded as construction resumes. SSAB expects no material impact on the project’s budget or timetable, with completion still scheduled for 2029.
