Salzgitter joins forces with Iberdrola to power green steel with new solar plant

German steelmaker Salzgitter AG has taken a significant step in its green transition by securing renewable energy from a new Iberdrola solar plant in Saxony-Anhalt.

Through a 15-year power purchase agreement, the facility will supply Salzgitter’s SALCOS low-emission steel program with up to 60 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power over 20,000 homes and avoid 23,000 tons of CO₂ each year.

Built with support from local firms, the 65 MWp plant strengthens regional partnerships while boosting Salzgitter’s shift toward carbon-neutral production. The company highlights that this reliable clean power, which will later integrate with hydrogen-based processes, is vital for securing Europe’s future green steel supply.
