Salzgitter gains full control of HKM steel works

The European Commission cleared Salzgitter Mannesmann GmbH (SMG)’s acquisition of Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH (HKM) under the EU Merger Regulation.

Previously a joint venture with thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG (tkSE) and Vallourec Tubes SAS (Vallourec), the Duisburg-based site now falls under Salzgitter's sole management. HKM produces carbon steel slabs and rounds used in rolling and pipe manufacturing.

Regulators approved the transaction via a simplified procedure, finding no risks to market competition. The Commission said that the semi-finished products sector retains enough strong players to preserve balance.

This consolidation reflects an industry-wide push for supply chain efficiency as European steelmakers adapt to energy costs and industry transitions. By securing full ownership, Salzgitter stabilizes its access to critical raw materials while optimizing its production assets within Germany.
