Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) manufactured and supplied 5,700 tons of special quality DMR 249A grade steel hot-rolled sheets and plates from its Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela steel plants. This entire batch went into building three new Indian Navy vessels: INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned the warships on June 21, 2026, in Kolkata.

To support national self-reliance and substitute imports, SAIL boosted manufacturing capacities for these specialized plates, particularly at the Special Plate Plant at the Rourkela Steel Plant.

This delivery adds to the company's history of supplying steel for critical defense projects, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and INS Nilgiri.

CMD Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda noted that this high-strength steel protects the nation's strategic independence.
