Romania’s UMB Steel nears restart of Oțelu Roșu mill with 700,000-tonne capacity

A A A
Romanian company UMB Steel is advancing plans to restart the long-idled Oțelu Roșu steel mill, marking its expansion into domestic steel manufacturing.

Idled since 2012, the facility is slated to achieve an annual capacity of approximately 700,000 tons of long products upon resumption.

The planned production route integrates a scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) with continuous casting and rolling mills. Output will center on construction-focused products, including rebar, merchant bars, compact coils, and wire rod.

While Romania's domestic long steel demand remains heavily reliant on public works, UMB’s leadership in local civil construction secures an internal outlet for the new output. Furthermore, the scrap-to-EAF process aligns with tightening European decarbonization standards.
