South Korea's steel giants POSCO and Hyundai Steel are reportedly in talks to jointly invest in a new steel plant in Louisiana, US, to mitigate the impact of US President Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. If finalized, it would mark the first overseas production partnership between the two major South Korean steelmakers. 

This move aligns with Hyundai Motor Group’s earlier announcement to invest US$21 billion in the US over the next four years, including a 2.7 million ton/year steel plant. About half of the funding is expected from Hyundai Steel and external investors. 

Industry analysts say joint investment would reduce financial burden and create a win-win strategy, allowing both companies to establish a local production base and bypass tariff barriers.
