New Canadian tariffs threaten Taiwan’s screw exports

Canada now imposes a 25% additional tariff on steel derivatives, including most screws, bolts, and nuts. This policy, effective since December 26, 2025, targets imports to protect the domestic industry.

As Taiwan's fifth-largest export market for fasteners, Canada received 48,566 tons of these products last year, valued at US$174.77 million.

Taiwan’s Office of Trade Negotiations initiated consultations with the WTO, saying that these measures damage the domestic industrial interests and create an estimated NT$1.3 billion tax burden.

Some exporters may negotiate cost-sharing with Canadian buyers, but market participants worry that the price increases will reduce demand. Although export volumes have recently increased, these new trade barriers cast uncertainty over the future of Taiwanese screw manufacturers.
